Based on the book by the great German writer Christa Wolf, the Cassandra staged at the Astra Theatre experiences a painful conflict between the present of war and a future of peace: tied to long elastic ropes on stage, the Trojan princess vaticinates on the fate of us all. Christa Wolf, one of the most important contemporary German-speaking authors, wrote her Cassandra in 1983 and chose to take a different view from the classical Homeric one, recovering the Trojan priestess’ gaze and voice to give us an account of female liberation and the need for peace. Her being a seer keeps her trapped between the past and the future.
