From 27 October to 25 February, the Sale Chiablese of the Musei Reali will host the exhibition AFRICA. Le collezioni dimenticate, conceived and produced by the Musei Reali with the Direzione Regionale Musei Piemonte and the Museo di Antropologia ed Etnografia dell’Università di Torino (MAET), in collaboration with the Museo delle Civiltà di Roma, with the support of CoopCulture and the contribution of Tuxor SpA. The exhibition presents over 160 works and artefacts, most of which have never been seen before - sculptures, tools, amulets, jewellery, weapons, shields, drums and historical photographs - from the collections of the Savoy residences and from the MAET, with loans from the Museum of Civilisations in Rome and Palazzo Madama - Museo Civico d’Arte Antica. The itinerary is divided into five sections documenting Torino’s relations with Congo, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia and Libya in the late 19th and early 20th century: explorers and adventurers, technicians and engineers working for the administration of the Belgian Congo, Italian penetration in the Horn of Africa, visits and diplomatic relations with kings and princes of the House of Savoy, up to the tragedy of colonial occupation. The contemporary installation The Smoking Table by Ethiopian artist Bekele Mekonnen concludes the itinerary.
