Since the early Middle Ages, the
Via Francigena has been the route followed by pilgrims from all over central and northern Europe to reach
Rome, seat of the Papacy and heart of Christianity. The route is 1600 km long.
The
Francigena itinerary in Piemonte, a fundamental land of passage from the Alps to the Po Valley, was not only a devotional route but also a route travelled by
merchants, armies, emperors, politicians and men of culture who created a channel of exchange and communication that led to the substantial unity of European culture between the 10th and 13th centuries. This 12-kilometre walk lasts 4 hours and will allow you to walk a part of the route of the Via Francigena Morenico-Canavesana, covering a beautiful stretch of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre created by the retreat of the Balteo Glacier, one of the best preserved geological conformations of glacial origin in the world, dotted with lakes and characterised by the long profile of the Serra, a 25 km long moraine ridge, the longest in Europe.
Starting from
Ivrea, we will continue towards
Cascinette d’ivrea, Burolo and Bollengo. During the walk it will be possible to admire: the
Cathedral of Santa Maria with its crypt, the suggestive
Lago Campagna of glacial origin, the parish
church of San Pietro e Paolo with its bell tower, the suggestive
Cappella della Maddalena and much more.
Visits are
free with compulsory reservation. Comfortable clothing is recommended. A shuttle bus will be available on site to take you back to the starting point.
The initiative is financed by "
Via Francigena For All": the project that the
Regione Piemonte presented in 2022 on the occasion of a call for proposals by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers for projects concerning accessible and inclusive tourism for people with disabilities, which aims to create an all-round usability of the routes at the service of a wide target: from people with physical-motor or cognitive-intellectual and sensory disabilities, to the elderly; from families with small children to people with chronic health problems.
