Architects, landscape gardeners, princes, writers, intellectuals and scholars have travelled Europe for centuries visiting its gardens, admiring the landscapes and drawing inspiration.
Thanks to notebooks, letters, diaries - either published or gathering dust in archives - we can reconstruct the itineraries and embark on a virtual tour through these beauty spots: witnesses to the history and the culture of a continent.
This exhibition follows the theme of this journey and is divided into twelve sections: paintings, drawings, wooden models and other objects illustrate famous gardens from the 15th to the early 19th centuries, from Italia’s geometric layouts to the perspective flight of the French, all the way to England’s “picturesque” compositions.
The Reggia of Venaria and its gardens are thereby the ideal backdrop - through works by dozens of artists - to the Italia of the “Grand Tour”, the Europe of kingdoms and empires with the gardens of villas and palaces, a manifestation of power but also a phenomenon of “fashion” and the evocation of worlds so far away as to merely be dreamed of.
