Domus et ecclesia in the heart of the Alps
The origins of this shrine, which is built at 1,200 metres above sea level, are very ancient: it was first a stopping point and then a place of worship for the pilgrims that would climb to pray to the statue of the Black Virgin.
The Savoy family, for whom Oropa had great symbolic and devotional importance, commissioned the best court architects to transform the ancient church into the most majestic Marian shrine in the Alps.
The monumental complex nestles within a natural setting of extraordinary beauty, in a Regional Wildlife Reserve of great interest to naturalists, and which also includes the "Sacro Monte di Oropa", included by UNESCO in the World Heritage Sites.
