Talc mineral extraction in the
Garida mine began in the late 19th century, when the first galleries were dug, and ended in 1968. Today, the mining complex is a historical, cultural and geological heritage in which the evolution of mining techniques is accompanied by a lithological context of extraordinary interest.
The underground, humid environment is also an ideal habitat for some animal species. The average temperature inside the mine is 10 °C, with high humidity and in some places water is present. A visit to the underground route lasts about an hour and is possible practically all year round. (advance booking required).
For the visit to the mine,
appropriate clothing for mountain hikes is essential, with comfortable, waterproof footwear.
Other mandatory equipment will be provided at the start of the visit (safety helmet with light).
Moreover, for
groups, it is possible to combine half-day or full-day excursions (hiking trip or visit to the experimental geological museum of the C.A.I. section of Giaveno). For
schools, thematic didactic routes are possible. Leave the car at the junction for Borgata Flizzo and continue on foot for 15 minutes along a dirt road.
